HAND CUT TYPE

TO A CHILD TRAPPED IN A BARBERSHOP IS an illustration that I did a while ago when I was getting my BFA at CCAD (Columbus College of Art and Design). The words of this poem by Philip Levine really struck me as something that I needed to illustrate! At the time I did not have a computer, didn't know Illustrator or Photoshop and subsequently cut out every letter by hand. I found sheets of fonts and photocopied them to the right size or found letters that I liked in magazines or newspapers. The drawing and details are done with black India Ink. Super fun project to illustrate!

HE WHALE DANCERS

THE WHALE DANCERS IS A BOOK THAT I DESIGNED THE COVER TYPE FOR. ( I DID NOT ILLUSTRATE THE ENTIRE BOOK, JUST THE TYPE) WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE GETTING MY BFA AT CCAD (COLUMBUS COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN) I TOOK ON SEVERAL FREELANCE PROJECTS. THE WHALE DANCERS WAS WRITTEN BY ANNE ELIZABETH KAFOURE AND PUBLISHED BY RASPBERRY PUBLICATIONS, INC. IN 1995.
LET ME EMPHASIZE THAT THE WRITER WAS 14 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN AND ILLUSTRATED! ANNE WAS AN INCREDIBLY TALENTED SOPHOMORE AT WESTERVILLE NORTH HIGH SCHOOL IN WESTERVILLE, OH. I NEVER GOT TO MEET HER BUT WOULD IMAGINE SHE WENT ON TO DO AMAZING THINGS!
THE TYPE I DID FOR THE COVER AND TITLE PAGE IS BLACK INDIA INK. THE GOAL WAS TO HAVE IT WORK WITH THE BLACK AND WATERCOLOR ILLUSTRATIONS IN THE BOOK.
